7 Types of Artificial Intelligence: What They Are and How They Work

Artificial intelligence (AI) is when computers or machines can do things that usually need human intelligence. This includes learning, solving problems, making decisions, seeing and understanding things, and reasoning. 

AI is a part of computer science that creates programs and systems that help machines understand their surroundings, learn from experience, and take actions to reach specific goals.

Here are 7 Types of Artificial Intelligence:

Reactive Machines: AI That Responds Only in the Moment

Reactive machines are the most basic form of AI, designed to operate only in the present moment. These systems respond to specific inputs without storing past experiences or learning from them. A classic example is IBM’s Deep Blue, the chess-playing computer that famously defeated Garry Kasparov.

While Deep Blue could analyse potential moves with precision, it had no memory and could not learn from previous games. Reactive machines are effective for highly specialised and repetitive tasks but lack adaptability.

Limited Memory AI: Learning From the Past

Limited memory AI takes this concept a step further by learning from historical data to improve predictions and decision-making. Most of today’s AI, including machine learning and deep learning models, falls into this category.

Limited memory AI powers self-driving cars by analysing traffic patterns, facial recognition systems, and tools used for supply chain optimisation.

By referencing past experiences, these systems adjust their behaviour and enhance performance over time, making them more intelligent than purely reactive machines.

Theory of Mind AI: Understanding Human Emotions

Theory of mind AI, still largely theoretical, represents a more advanced stage of artificial intelligence. Inspired by a psychological concept, it refers to systems capable of understanding human emotions, beliefs, and intentions.

Such AI would need to interpret human language and context, recognise emotions, and respond in a human-like way. While researchers are actively exploring this type of AI, it is not yet implemented in real-world applications.

The potential for natural, emotionally aware interactions makes this a highly anticipated area of AI research.

Self-Aware AI: AI With Consciousness

Self-aware AI is the most advanced and speculative type of artificial intelligence. A self-aware AI system would possess consciousness and a sense of self, enabling it to experience emotions, understand humans on a profound level, and make decisions with awareness of its own existence.

Currently, self-aware AI exists only in science fiction, and creating machines with consciousness remains far beyond today’s technological capabilities.

Narrow AI (Weak AI): Task-Specific Intelligence

Narrow AI, also known as weak AI, is the most common type of AI in use today. These systems are designed to perform specific tasks and excel within their domain, but cannot generalise to other functions.

Examples include voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, customer service chatbots, and recommendation algorithms on streaming platforms. Narrow AI has become indispensable in many sectors, performing tasks efficiently and accurately, yet it cannot think or adapt outside its programmed function.

General AI (Strong AI): Matching Human Intelligence

Artificial general intelligence (AGI), often referred to as strong AI, aims to match or surpass human intelligence across a wide range of tasks. An AGI system would be capable of solving complex problems, learning across multiple domains, and adapting to novel challenges independently.

While AGI is a central goal of AI research, it has not yet been realised and remains a significant milestone that scientists are striving to achieve.

Superintelligent AI: Beyond Human Intelligence

Finally, superintelligent AI is a theoretical concept in which machines surpass human intelligence in all areas, including creativity, decision-making, and problem-solving. While superintelligent AI is a frequent subject of speculative fiction and ethical debates, it does not yet exist. Its potential raises profound philosophical and safety considerations, making it one of the most discussed topics in AI ethics.
