8 Football Clubs That Have Won the Treble in History
Winning a treble is one of the highest achievements in football. It means a club wins three major trophies in one season, usually the domestic league, the main domestic cup, and the biggest continental trophy (the UEFA Champions League in Europe).
Only eight European clubs have achieved this incredible feat by winning their league, their main national cup, and the Champions League (or old European Cup) all in the same season.
Here’s a look at the eight legendary teams that have made football history by winning the continental treble:
1. Celtic (1966/67)
Celtic made history in the 1966-67 season by winning five trophies, including the Scottish League, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup, Glasgow Cup, and the European Cup.
They are the only team to win a European quintuple (five titles) in one season. Their famous team, known as the “Lisbon Lions,” beat Inter Milan 2-1 in the European Cup final held in Lisbon.
Led by manager Jock Stein, Celtic scored a record 196 goals across all competitions that season.
2. Ajax (1971/72)
In the 1971-72 season, Ajax won the Dutch League (Eredivisie), the KNVB Cup, and the European Cup. They also claimed the Intercontinental Cup that year.
Coached by Rinus Michels and led by star player Johan Cruyff, Ajax became famous for their “Total Football” style, dominating Europe and losing just one match all season.
3. PSV Eindhoven (1987/88)
PSV Eindhoven completed their treble in the 1987-88 season by winning the Eredivisie, the KNVB Cup, and the European Cup.
With stars like Ronald Koeman and Hans van Breukelen and guided by coach Guus Hiddink, PSV won the European Cup final on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
4. Manchester United (1998/99)
In the 1998-99 season, Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson made history as the first English club to win the treble — Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League.
In the Champions League final against Bayern Munich, late goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory at the Nou Camp.
5. Barcelona (2008-09, 2014-15)
Barcelona is the only club to have won the treble twice: first in 2008-09 under Pep Guardiola and again in 2014-15 under Luis Enrique.
In 2009, they beat Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League final, and in 2015, they defeated Juventus 3-1.
Players like Lionel Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, and Busquets were key in both successful campaigns.
6. Inter Milan (2009/10
Inter Milan achieved a historic treble in the 2009-10 season under manager José Mourinho.
They won Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the Champions League.
In the Champions League final, Diego Milito scored twice as Inter beat Bayern Munich 2-0, becoming the first and only Italian club to win the European treble.
7. Bayern Munich (2012-13, 2019-20)
Bayern Munich have won the treble twice — first in 2012-13 under Jupp Heynckes and again in 2019-20 under Hansi Flick.
In 2013, Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Champions League final. In 2020, they defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 and became the first team to win every match in a Champions League season.
8. Manchester City (2022/23)
In the 2022-23 season, Manchester City, coached by Pep Guardiola, became the eighth European team to win the treble.
City won the Premier League, FA Cup (beating Manchester United in the final), and the Champions League (beating Inter Milan 1-0 thanks to Rodri’s goal).
This made Guardiola the first manager to win trebles with two different clubs — Barcelona and Manchester City.
