African Women Should Not Wear Wigs – Actress Taiwo Ajai-Lycett

Popular Nollywood actress, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett has expressed her views on African women wearing wigs, attributing it to low self-esteem.

The veteran actress, a National Honours Award holder, spoke passionately about the beauty of African women and the significance of embracing their natural hair during an interview with Vanguard.

Ajai-Lycett highlighted the belief that African women are blessed with the best kind of hair among all races, emphasizing the versatility that comes with natural African hair.

She questioned the preference for wigs and ‘human hair,’ stressing the importance of self-love and appreciation for one’s God-given beauty.

“We have to love ourselves as Africans and appreciate our God-given beauty. Our Africanness is what stands us out among all the races of the world,” she asserted.

The actress went on to suggest that women who opt for wigs and human hair may be struggling with low self-esteem, linking their desire to emulate Western looks as a sign of insecurity. According to Ajai-Lycett, embracing one’s natural beauty is a powerful statement of confidence.

In addition to her comments on beauty standards, Ajai-Lycett emphasized the crucial role women play in society.

She underscored the significance of treating the women in one’s life with kindness, recognizing that their happiness is integral to overall well-being.

“If you want your life to be in order and successful, be kind to the women in your life. It is when the women in your life are happy that you can truly be happy,” she added.

As the debate around beauty standards continues, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett’s perspective encourages a reevaluation of societal norms and promotes a celebration of the diverse and inherent beauty of African women.
