Adamawa’s Shilla Boys Morphs into Unisex Crime Franchise
The Adamawa police command just busted some cells of a crime gang they believed ran a ring of bad boys. But their knowledge of the group’s mode of operation has just fallen a step behind reality.
Shila Boys, a gang of teenagers and, in few cases, twenagers, picking pockets, snatching bags, and spiriting phones in Yola now mixes in some girls.
Police PRO Suleiman Nguroje in a statement said recent operations across the state raked in 49 of the gang members, including girls.
Before, the boys deployed tricycles whose passengers they robbed, but now advanced to riding in cars for drive-by robberies.
The girls denied being part of the ring, though. Many consider their excuse–of just co-mingling–a weak cop-out.
Police authorities said the boys’ hideouts and black spots stretch as far as Geriyo Junction, Doubeli Junction, Jambutu Aso Rock, Behind Ramat College, and Total Flyover, all in Jimeta, Yola North Local Government Area.
Deputy Governor Kaletapwa Farauta revealed on Tuesday the government had prioritized tackling the menace of the young criminals spreading across the state.
Domestic violence and culpable homicide had featured earlier as the biggest headache racking Adamawa before. Shilla Boys gangsterism now takes the shine off those crimes, and gives the government more to worry about.
