Ademola Lookman Responds to Coach Gasperini’s Criticism After Missed Penalty

Ademola Lookman, Atalanta’s forward, stood up to his coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, following critical comments about his penalty miss in Atalanta’s UEFA Champions League play-off loss to Club Brugge. Lookman, who had scored earlier in the match, failed to convert a penalty in the 62nd minute, leading to pointed remarks from his coach.

Gasperini expressed his dissatisfaction publicly, labeling Lookman as one of the least effective penalty takers he had seen. He noted that Lookman wasn’t designated to take the penalty and his decision to do so was not well received.

“Lookman should not have taken that penalty. He’s one of the poorest penalty takers I’ve known. His track record, even in practice, shows he misses a lot. We had Retegui and De Ketelaere ready, but Lookman, carried away by his earlier goal, took the shot, which I really didn’t appreciate,” Gasperini remarked after the match.

In response, Lookman took to Instagram to express his feelings about the situation. He felt that the public rebuke was not only hurtful but also disrespectful, given his dedication to the team and the community of Bergamo.

“It’s disheartening to have to make this statement, especially considering our collective achievements. Being publicly criticized like this is painful and feels deeply disrespectful. I am committed to our team and our fans, working hard every day to contribute to our success,” he stated on Instagram.

Lookman clarified that his decision to take the penalty came from the team’s assigned penalty taker at the time, indicating that it was a collective decision rather than a solo act.

“The designated penalty taker for the match told me to take the penalty; I wanted to support the team, so I took on that moment,” he explained.

Despite the ordeal, Lookman remains positive, viewing life’s challenges as opportunities for growth and strength.

Atalanta’s campaign in the Champions League ended following a 5-2 aggregate loss to Club Brugge, but the incident has sparked a conversation about player-coach dynamics and Lookman’s role in future matches.
