AFCON 2025: How Much the Super Eagles Earned for Reaching the Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and, in the process, secured a substantial financial reward from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The Super Eagles sealed qualification for the last eight with an emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique at the Complexe Sportif de Fes.

Victor Osimhen led the charge with two goals, while Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams added one apiece to cap off a dominant performance against the Mambas.

Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 Earnings So Far

By reaching the quarter-final stage, Nigeria has earned $1.3 million, which is approximately ₦1.95 billion, in prize money.

This amount is guaranteed regardless of the team’s result in the next round and reflects CAF’s continued investment in rewarding teams that progress deep into the tournament.

CAF had earlier announced an increase in prize money for AFCON 2025, with the tournament winner set to receive $10 million, a 43% increase from the $7 million awarded to champions at the 2023 edition.

While the prize money for other stages remains unchanged, reaching the quarter-finals already represents a significant financial boost for participating teams like Nigeria.

Quarter-Final Challenge Ahead

According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Super Eagles will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the quarter-finals.

Head coach Eric Chelle made it clear that Nigeria is not overly concerned about who they face next. He described both potential opponents as strong sides and said his focus remains on preparing the team for another tough test.

Defender Bright Osayi-Samuel, however, expressed a slight preference for DR Congo, citing Nigeria’s loss to them during the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff and his desire for revenge.

Still, he maintained confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability to beat any opponent. Midfielder Frank Onyeka echoed the coach’s stance, stressing that the team’s priority is improving their own performance rather than worrying about the opposition.

Team captain Wilfred Ndidi also emphasized unity and commitment, noting that every match at this stage of the tournament is difficult.

Government Support for the Team

Beyond CAF prize money, the Super Eagles have also received backing from home. Reports indicate that the Federal Government approved ₦3 billion to support the team’s participation at AFCON 2025, covering logistics and other expenses.

The move underscores the government’s determination to ensure a successful tournament run, especially after Nigeria’s disappointment of missing out on the FIFA World Cup.
