AFCON 2025: Nigeria May Face Algeria, Morocco Before Final
Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign has moved into the knockout stage, and the road ahead is now clearer. After winning all three group matches and finishing top of Group C with nine points, the Super Eagles have positioned themselves as one of the teams to watch as the tournament heads toward the final in Rabat on January 18, 2026.
But while Nigeria’s group-stage run was perfect, the toughest tests usually start after the group phase. If the Super Eagles want to lift the trophy, they may have to beat at least one heavyweight, possibly Algeria, and potentially hosts Morocco, depending on how results fall.
Round of 16: Nigeria vs Mozambique
Nigeria’s first knockout game is against Mozambique, who qualified as one of the best third-placed teams. This is a match Nigeria will be expected to win, but knockout football is rarely straightforward. One mistake can change everything, and Mozambique will likely set up to frustrate Nigeria and hit on the counter.
If Nigeria wins, the team moves into the quarter-finals and stays firmly on track for a deep run.
Quarter-final: Algeria or DR Congo Could Be Next
If the Super Eagles get past Mozambique, the next opponent is expected to come from the match between Algeria and DR Congo.
This is where the difficulty rises sharply. Algeria are known for their strong organisation and technical quality, while DR Congo can be physical, direct, and dangerous in big moments. Either way, Nigeria would be facing a serious test.
Semi-final: Morocco Could Be Waiting
If Nigeria makes it through the quarter-final, a possible semi-final clash with Morocco becomes a real scenario.
Morocco are the host nation, and that often comes with extra energy from the crowd, plus pressure that can either fuel them or weigh them down. Other possible semi-final opponents from that side include Tanzania, South Africa, or Cameroon, depending on how the bracket plays out.
Final: A Different Set of Opponents
If Nigeria reaches the final in Rabat, the opponent would likely come from the other side of the bracket. That side includes several strong teams, meaning Nigeria could face any of these depending on who survives the knockout rounds:
Senegal, Mali, Tunisia, Egypt, Benin, Burkina Faso, Sudan, or Ivory Coast.
