AFCON 2025: Six Teams Knocked Out as Group Stage Heats Up

Six national teams have been eliminated from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco as the group stage enters its decisive phase.

Botswana became the first team to exit the tournament after losing their opening two matches. They were followed by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, who also crashed out after suffering back-to-back defeats in their first two group games.

Zambia’s campaign ended on Monday night after a 3–0 loss to host nation Morocco, a result that confirmed their elimination.

Comoros also bowed out of the competition, becoming the first third-placed team to be eliminated after finishing the group stage with a points total that placed them below at least four other third-placed sides.

So far, six teams have already secured qualification for the Round of 16. They are Algeria, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt.

As the final group matches are played, more teams are expected to either confirm their places in the knockout stage or exit the tournament.
