All Nigerian State Governors and Their Political Parties as at December 2025

Nigeria’s political map as of mid-December 2025 clearly shows which parties control power at the state level as governors.

After recent elections and political realignments, the All Progressives Congress has emerged as the dominant force across most of the country, while opposition parties continue to hold on to a smaller but important number of states.

This distribution of governors helps explain how policies are shaped at the grassroots, how federal and state governments relate, and what direction Nigeria’s politics may take ahead of future elections.

APC tightens its grip across the states

As at December 2025, the All Progressives Congress controls 27 out of Nigeria’s 36 states. This gives the ruling party a strong presence across almost every geopolitical zone, from the South-West and South-South to the North-West and North-East.

The APC’s spread includes states with major economic influence such as Lagos and Rivers, as well as politically sensitive regions like Kaduna, Borno, and Delta.

With governors in both urban and rural states, the party holds significant influence over policy decisions, development plans, and intergovernmental negotiations.

This wide control also places the APC in a strong position ahead of future elections, as state structures often play a key role in national political outcomes.

PDP holds limited but strategic ground

The People’s Democratic Party remains the main opposition party at the state level, but its control has reduced compared to previous years. As of December 2025, the PDP governs six states.

Despite the smaller number, the party still maintains relevance in parts of the North-East, North-Central, and South-West. States like Oyo and Bauchi continue to serve as important PDP strongholds, keeping the party active in national political discussions.

However, the reduced spread highlights the challenge the PDP faces in reclaiming ground lost in recent election cycles.

Smaller parties keep their footholds

Beyond the two major parties, a few states are governed by smaller political parties. These victories show the impact of local popularity, regional loyalty, and strong grassroots support.

Parties like the Labour Party, APGA, NNPP, and Accord Party each control one state. While their numbers are small, their presence proves that Nigerian politics still allows room for alternative voices, especially where voters connect strongly with individual candidates rather than party labels.
