Argentina Tops New FIFA Ranking as Nigeria Falls to 38th Place
Nigeria has fallen to 38th place on the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday. The Super Eagles now have 1498.93 points, which is lower than their earlier 1520.27 points.
Prior, Nigeria was ranked 30th. The drop comes after their recent disappointing World Cup Qualifier matches played in Nigeria and Ivory Coast respectively.
The Super Eagles tied in a 1-1 game with Bafana Bafana of South Africa and lost 2-1 to Benin Republic, raising concerns about Nigeria’s representation at the 2026 World Cup.
The Super Eagles had also finished second at the 2024 African Cup of Nations after losing 2-1 to the host country, Ivory Coast.
Meanwhile, Argentina remains at the top of the rankings.
Argentina’s points slightly increased to 1860.14, thanks to its strong play in recent games. This keeps the country as the leading football nation in the world.
Other noteworthy changes include Liberia, which has climbed 10 places to reach its highest-ever rank of 142nd. Liberia gained 37.47 points, the most of any team, showing they are making significant progress.
On the other hand, Equatorial Guinea faced the biggest fall, dropping 10 places and losing 47.53 points. This big drop shows the country is going through a tough phase in its football journey.
