Bobrisky Faces Arraignment Today, Detained in Lone Cell on N400m Charges

Popular Nigerian cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, is set to be arraigned before the Federal High Court in Lagos today. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has pressed charges against Bobrisky, accusing him of alleged money laundering activities.

The EFCC filed six counts against Bobrisky, including money laundering and abuse of the Nigerian currency, the naira. According to the charge sheet, Bobrisky is alleged to have tampered with various sums of money by spraying them at social events, a practice that is considered an abuse of the naira.

In one instance, Bobrisky is accused of spraying N400,000 at a social event at the IMAX Circle Mall in Lekki, Lagos, on March 24, 2024. Other allegations include spraying N50,000 at an event in Ikorodu and N20,000 at two separate events in Ikeja and Oniru, Victoria Island.

The EFCC also claims that Bobrisky, trading under the name “Bob Express” between September 1, 2021, and April 4, 2024, failed to declare the activities of his company to the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering. During this period, it is alleged that a total of N127.7 million and N53 million were paid into the company’s account.

Bobrisky has been in EFCC detention since Wednesday night, failing to meet the conditions of the administrative bail offered to him on Thursday. EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that Bobrisky was granted administrative bail but had yet to meet the bail conditions.

The EFCC has expressed its seriousness about restoring the dignity of the naira and is actively investigating Bobrisky for alleged abuse of the currency. The commission has stated that Bobrisky will be charged to court soon, following the conclusion of their investigation.

Bobrisky placed in a lone cell

Sources within the EFCC have revealed that Bobrisky is being detained in a lone cell, without any cellmates. This arrangement is due to his unique identity, as he is neither in a male nor female cell.
