Can Anyone Beat Ademola Lookman to Win CAF Top Prize?

Ademola Lookman may have missed out on the Ballon d’Or, but his recent performances prove he’s more than ready to claim CAF’s African Footballer of the Year title. 

The Super Eagles star showcased his talents at Atalanta’s recent Serie A match, where his stunning double against Napoli reminded everyone why he’s a top contender for Africa’s most prestigious football award.

Lookman’s trip to the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris was a proud moment. Though he wasn’t expected to win, he attended with his father and youth coach, enjoying the recognition after a season of standout performances. 

While the ultimate prize went to Manchester City’s Rodri, Lookman’s nomination marked a major achievement in his career, showing how far he’s come since struggling to establish himself at various clubs.

After joining Atalanta, Lookman hit his stride, notably leading his team to victory in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen. This past weekend, he delivered what may have been his best performance yet against Napoli. 

First, he was quick to react to a setup from Charles De Ketelaere, seizing a loose ball and volleying it into the net with his left foot—a classic poacher’s goal. Then, about 20 minutes later, he skillfully set up a right-footed rocket from outside the box, sending the ball past Napoli’s goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Lookman was unstoppable that night, not only scoring twice but also creating three solid chances for his teammates. With six goals and four assists in just eight league matches, Lookman’s stats reinforce his position as the CAF favorite. And with Mohamed Salah—a long-time rival—not on the shortlist this year, the path looks clearer for Lookman to take the crown.

But Salah remains a threat, showing his brilliance with a game-winning strike for Liverpool against Nottingham Forest. It was his 164th Premier League goal, a reminder that Salah, too, is still a powerhouse.
