Can Idris Elba Capture the Role of Okonkwo in the Coming ‘Things Fall Apart’ Series?

English actor Idris Elba is set to take on the iconic role of Okonkwo in the upcoming TV adaptation of Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe’s literary masterpiece, produced by A24.

Known for his remarkable performances in The Wire, Luther, and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Elba’s acting prowess is undeniable.

But the question remains: Is he the right fit for Okonkwo, a character deeply rooted in Nigerian and, more specifically, Igbo culture?

While many celebrate Elba’s involvement in the project, a large section of Nigerian fans remains skeptical. The core of their concern lies in whether a British actor, despite his talent, can truly embody the essence of Okonkwo—a character whose struggles are intrinsically tied to the Igbo worldview and colonial-era Nigeria.

Should a Nollywood Actor Have Been Cast Instead?

Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood, boasts several highly respected actors who could arguably bring an even more authentic portrayal of Okonkwo. Pete Edochie, who famously played Okonkwo in the Nigerian TV adaptation of Things Fall Apart in the late 80s, set the bar high for any future interpretations of this character.

His commanding presence, deep Igbo accent, and understanding of the culture made his portrayal of Okonkwo unforgettable.

Other Nollywood actors such as Stan Nze, Bob Manuel, and Uzor Arukwe could also have been fitting choices for the role. Each of them has delivered stellar performances in projects deeply rooted in Nigerian culture, showing their capability to handle all the layers of a character like Okonkwo. Their deep connection to Nigerian heritage would likely offer a more resonant performance that many Nigerians feel is essential for the role.

The Accent Debate: African vs. British

One of the main concerns among Nigerian fans is the accent. A significant part of Things Fall Apart’s cultural authenticity comes from its African setting, and many fans worry that hearing Okonkwo speak with a British accent might detract from the story’s roots.

Okonkwo’s journey is the story of a traditional Igbo man grappling with the onset of British colonialism in his homeland. His struggles are personal, emotional, and cultural—an African experience.

Having a British accent, even subtly, in a character like Okonkwo might feel jarring to many viewers. This role demands not only a perfect understanding of the Igbo language but also the cultural nuances that go beyond the dialogue. The way Okonkwo moves, speaks, and reacts is tied to the tradition he so fiercely protects, and some fear that an outsider to the culture, no matter how skilled, may not capture those subtleties.

Can Elba Bridge the Cultural Gap?

Elba’s track record shows that he is an actor who takes his roles seriously. His portrayal of Nelson Mandela was highly praised, and he has repeatedly proven his ability to immerse himself in diverse characters.

However, Things Fall Apart is not just another story. It is a deeply Nigerian narrative that has become a cornerstone of African literature. The challenge for Elba will be not only to honor the legacy of Achebe’s work but to fully inhabit the spirit of Okonkwo, a character whose identity is so intertwined with his culture.

The global reach of this new adaptation, with Elba at the helm, could bring Things Fall Apart to a wider audience, which is undoubtedly a positive. But for many Nigerians, the heart of the story may risk being lost in translation if the cultural authenticity is not preserved.
