Canada Increases Work Hours for International Students to 24hrs

Canada has increased the number of hours international students can work during school terms from 20 to 24 hours per week. This change gives students more chances to gain work experience while continuing their studies.

Marc Miller, Canada’s Immigration Minister, said this new rule will help students balance their time better and gain important skills. He added that the change will also help Canada fill job shortages in many sectors.

Key Changes to the International Student Program

Full-Time Work During Academic Breaks:
International students can now work full-time during scheduled academic breaks such as summer and winter holidays. This gives students an opportunity to earn more without interfering with their studies.

Increased Weekly Work Limit:
The weekly work limit for international students during academic terms has been raised to 24 hours, offering more job opportunities while ensuring students maintain a manageable study schedule.

Enhanced Reporting Requirements:
Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) will now be required to submit reports twice a year to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These reports will confirm students’ enrollment status and academic progress to ensure compliance with study permit conditions.

Approval for Transfers Between Institutions:
Under the new rules, international students must seek approval before transferring to a different DLI. This ensures that they remain in compliance with their study permit conditions and academic standards.

Special Provisions for Quebec Students:
In Quebec, eligible international students can work off-campus without needing a separate work permit, provided they meet specific criteria, such as enrolling in full-time post-secondary or vocational programs that lead to recognised qualifications.
