Coping With PTSD Through the Harsh Economy

Nigerians are dealing with a harsh economy. The stress of daily survival, from securing the next meal and paying school fees to covering house rent, can lead to PTSD. It’s not just the struggle that affects us; developing PTSD can affect our well-being and outcomes.

As we navigate these challenging times, understanding and addressing the effects of PTSD is crucial for maintaining mental health.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event, either experiencing it or witnessing it.

Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Although often associated with veterans, PTSD can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, or background.

Gender Differences in PTSD

Research indicates that while men are more likely to experience traumatic events, women are about twice as likely to develop PTSD.

Men typically encounter trauma related to accidents, physical assault, combat, or witnessing death or injury. Women, however, are more likely to experience sexual assault and child sexual abuse, which are highly predictive of PTSD.

The symptoms can also manifest differently. Men with PTSD may display more aggression and impulsivity, whereas women are more likely to experience emotional numbing and avoidance.

 Solutions to PTSD

1. Therapeutic Approaches

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps patients understand and change the way they think about their trauma and its aftermath.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Involves focusing on traumatic memory while experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.

Medication: Antidepressants such as SSRIs and SNRIs are commonly used to treat PTSD symptoms.

2. Support Systems

Strong social support from family, friends, and support groups can be crucial. Sharing experiences with others who have similar experiences can provide comfort and insights.

3. Lifestyle Changes

Regular physical activity, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep can significantly impact one’s ability to manage stress and symptoms of PTSD.

4. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Practices such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can help ground individuals and reduce the intensity of PTSD symptoms.
