Countries with the Longest and Shortest Constitutions in the World

A country’s constitution is more than just a legal document,it is the blueprint of its governance, the backbone of its laws, and the guarantee of its citizens’ rights.

But not all constitutions are created equal. While some are sprawling tomes that cover nearly every aspect of government and society, others are remarkably brief, focusing on core principles and leaving details to ordinary laws.

The Longest Constitutions

At the top of the list is India, whose constitution, adopted in 1950, stretches over 145,000 words across 395 articles and 12 schedules. It’s often called the world’s lengthiest constitution, reflecting India’s immense diversity and complexity.

From fundamental rights and duties to the structure of government and detailed social policies, the Indian Constitution covers nearly every facet of public life. Its length ensures that it addresses issues relevant to a nation of over 1.4 billion people, balancing regional diversity with national unity.

Iran also has a lengthy constitution, running over 90,000 words, combining Islamic law with modern governance frameworks. Like India, Iran’s constitution delves into every detail, from government structure to citizens’ responsibilities and economic policies, leaving little ambiguity.

The Shortest Constitutions

On the other end of the spectrum, the United States has a famously concise constitution, containing just about 7,500 words. Written in 1787, it focuses on the separation of powers, checks and balances, and the fundamental rights of citizens, leaving detailed governance rules to ordinary legislation.

This brevity has helped it endure for over two centuries, with amendments adding nuance as needed without overwhelming the original text.

Similarly, Monaco has a compact constitution of roughly 3,500 words, emphasising the monarchy’s role while guaranteeing basic rights and government principles. Its short length reflects the city-state’s small size and relatively simple governance needs.
