Countries with the Most Christian Populations in 2025

Christianity remains one of the world’s most widespread religions, tracing its roots back over two thousand years to the Middle East. By 2025, an estimated 2.2 billion people identify as Christians, meaning nearly one in every four people alive today belong to the faith.

From North America to Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America, Christianity has taken root in diverse cultures and communities.

Some countries stand out for their sheer number of Christians, either because of their large populations or because Christianity plays a central role in their national life. Below are the nations with the biggest Christian populations in 2025, according to figures from global research sources such as Pew Research, the CIA World Factbook, and the UN.

United States

The U.S. continues to top the list, with about 219 million Christians in 2025. Roughly 63% of Americans identify with the faith, making the country the single largest Christian population in the world.

Brazil

Brazil ranks second with around 169 million Christians, representing nearly 80% of its population. Christianity in Brazil is deeply tied to Catholic traditions, but vibrant Pentecostal and evangelical movements have also grown rapidly.

Mexico

Mexico follows closely with 118 million Christians, which makes up nearly nine out of every ten citizens. With 89% of the population identifying with the faith, Mexico is one of the most deeply Christian nations on earth.

Nigeria

The DRC has a Christian majority, with 105 million people identifying as Christian. An overwhelming 93% of the population practices the faith, making Christianity central to the country’s identity.

Philippines

Christianity dominates in the Philippines, where about 100 million people follow the faith. With its roots in Spanish colonization centuries ago, Christianity especially Catholicism remains an integral part of Filipino culture and traditions.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia has one of the oldest Christian traditions in the world, anchored by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. In 2025, about 91 million people roughly 67% of its population are Christian.

China

Although Christianity is a minority religion in China, the country’s vast population means that 72 million Christians live there. This figure represents only about 5% of the total population but is still enough to place China among the leading nations in terms of absolute numbers.

South Africa

In South Africa, Christianity is the dominant faith, embraced by 56 million people or 86% of the population. The religion plays a key role in the country’s cultural and social life.

Kenya
