Coup Plot in Nigeria? Nigerian Army Sets Record Straight

In a decisive response, the Nigerian Army has dismissed recent rumours of a potential coup against President Bola Tinubu’s administration as “fake news.”

This comes after an online publication suggested that the presidential guards were on “high alert” due to suspicions of a coup plot in Nigeria.

The article claimed that key brigades were under surveillance and that the Commander of the Presidential Guards Brigade, Col. Adebisi Onasanya, had held emergency meetings with President Tinubu and his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Brigadier Gen Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, refuted these claims in a statement. He said, “The Defence Headquarters wishes to categorically state that the allegation is totally false.”

He emphasized that the Guards Brigade’s primary responsibility is to protect the seat of power and the Federal Capital Territory and that they have always been on high alert to effectively execute their tasks.

The statement also highlighted the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa’s repeated assurances of the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to protecting and sustaining democracy in the country.

The statement added;

It will be recalled that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa had in various fora reiterated the unalloyed commitment of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the protection and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.

Therefore, the Defence Headquarters strongly condemn this unsubstantiated assertion which is just a figment of imagination of the publisher and enjoins members of the public to disregard it.

The Nigerian Army condemned the coup assertion as a mere figment of the publisher’s imagination and urged the public to disregard it.

They also called on relevant security agencies to take appropriate action against the publication for its “unpatriotic action” and announced plans to seek legal redress, citing an “ulterior motive of creating unnecessary tension in the country.”

Furthermore, the Defence Headquarters calls on relevant security agencies to immediately take appropriate action against the Sahara Reporters for this unpatriotic action.
