Davido, Don Jazzy, 5 Nigerian Producers Who Are Successful Artistes

The Nigerian music scene has always been a hub of creativity, where reinvention is the key to staying relevant.

One fascinating trend over the years is how some of the country’s most talented producers have successfully crossed over into life as full-fledged artistes.

These were once the minds behind the beats, shaping sounds for others, but today they command the stage with their own voices. From Davido to Don Jazzy, here are some names that prove producers can shine just as brightly in the spotlight.

Davido

Many fans only know Davido as one of Afrobeats’ biggest global stars, but his journey started behind the mixing console. Long before dropping international hits like Fall and Unavailable, Davido was producing tracks for artists such as Skales and his cousin NPZ.

His breakout came in 2011 when he co-produced Dami Duro with Shizzi, a song that catapulted him into mainstream fame. Since then, he has evolved into one of Africa’s most consistent hitmakers, dropping albums like A Good Time, A Better Time, Timeless, and most recently, 5ive.

Don Jazzy

When it comes to producers-turned-artistes, no list is complete without Don Jazzy. Michael Collins Ajereh started out as the genius behind Mo’Hits Records, working alongside D’banj to craft classics that shaped an entire generation of Afrobeats lovers.

Known for his deep voice and witty ad-libs, Don Jazzy has never shied away from stepping to the mic himself, whether on tracks with his signees or through fun collaborations like How Are You (My Friend) with Johnny Drille.

Beyond his own artistry, he remains one of the most influential figures in African music, launching stars like Rema, Ayra Starr, and Tiwa Savage.

Runtown

Douglas Jack Agu, better known as Runtown, is another talent who started out shaping beats rather than delivering vocals. Early in his career, he worked with J. Martins, contributing production and songwriting to the veteran singer’s projects.

But Runtown soon discovered his own voice, and by 2014, he had cemented himself as a performer with the Davido-assisted Gallardo. That success opened the door to classics like Mad Over You and For Life, making him a household name in the Afrobeats movement.

Pheelz

The name “Mr. Producer” says it all. Phillip Kayode Moses, better known as Pheelz, built his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most reliable producers, especially with Olamide and the YBNL camp.

From Baddest Guy Ever Liveth to countless street anthems, Pheelz’s touch was unmistakable. But he shocked the world in 2022 with Finesse, featuring BNXN. The song wasn’t just a hit, it became a global anthem, streamed hundreds of millions of times and even landing on Barack Obama’s summer playlist.

Today, Pheelz isn’t just a producer-turned-artiste; he’s proof that reinvention pays off big.

Young Jonn

Nicknamed “The Wicked Producer,” Young Jonn was once the go-to hitmaker for Olamide and other YBNL stars. He produced bangers like Story For The Gods and Bobo, which defined an era of street pop.

But in 2022, he took a bold step by signing with Chocolate City and officially switching lanes to being an artiste. His debut single Dada became a sensation, followed by collaborations with Davido, Tiwa Savage, and Ayra Starr.

In just a short time, Young Jonn has built a reputation as one of Afrobeats’ most exciting new voices, proving he’s just as deadly on the mic as he is behind the console.

Tekno

Augustine Miles Kelechi, popularly known as Tekno, embodies the versatility of the Nigerian music industry. He has produced for both local and international stars, including Davido’s If a song that won multiple awards and Won’t Be Late by Swae Lee featuring Drake.

But Tekno didn’t just stop at production. His singles like Pana, Duro, and Skeletun turned him into one of Africa’s most bankable artistes.

His talent also caught Beyoncé’s attention, earning him a spot on The Lion King: The Gift album with Don’t Jealous Me. Tekno’s dual success as both a producer and singer makes him a true Afrobeats powerhouse.

Phyno

Before he became the king of indigenous rap, Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike better known as Phyno was quietly building his name as a producer. He worked with established rappers like Illbliss and Nigga Raw, sharpening his craft and creating beats that blended hip-hop with Igbo cultural elements.

His big shift came when he decided to step into the booth himself, delivering hard-hitting tracks like Ghost Mode with Olamide and Man of the Year.
