“Deadpool & Wolverine” Hits N299 Million at Nigerian Box Office

Marvel Studios’ latest movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” has become a big hit in Nigeria, earning N299 million in less than two weeks. This is the third movie in the Deadpool series and is very popular worldwide.

Distributed by Filmoneng, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has done well in Nigeria despite some challenges. The movie, which cost $200 million to make, has made N299 million locally, up from N165 million the week before.

According to Business Elite, the movie made N144.1 million over its first weekend from July 26 to July 28, 2024.

On its first day in Nigerian cinemas, the movie made N41.6 million. It earned another N51.6 million on Saturday, bringing the total to N93.2 million by the end of the day.

Experts thought the movie would make around N115 million by the end of the opening weekend, but it surpassed expectations with N144.1 million.

Major Challenges

The movie’s success faced challenges due to nationwide protests starting on August 1, part of the #EndBadGovernance movement.

These protests led to the temporary closure of several cinemas, including Imperial Cinemas, which announced:

“Please be informed that the cinema will not be operational tomorrow (Aug 1) due to the upcoming nationwide protest.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused. We shall communicate with you when it is safe to reopen.”

Despite these disruptions, “Deadpool & Wolverine” still made N13 million on Friday, August 2, 2024, though this was a 69% drop from the previous Friday.

Global Success

Worldwide, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is doing very well. It has made about $850 million globally and is expected to reach $1 billion by the end of its third weekend.

Directed by Shawn Levy, who co-wrote the script with Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells, the film is produced by Marvel Studios, Maximum Effort, and 21 Laps Entertainment.

It is the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and follows “Deadpool” (2016) and “Deadpool 2” (2018).

The movie stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine, with Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, and Matthew Macfadyen in supporting roles.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” not only brings Deadpool into the MCU but also keeps the R-rating like the previous movies.

The film also features Wesley Snipes as Blade in a cameo, earning him a Guinness World Record for the longest career as a live-action Marvel character, nearly 26 years after he first played Blade in the 1998 movie.
