Defence Headquarters Explains Recent Army Drone Attack in Kaduna
The Defence Headquarters has said that the recent Army drone attack in Kaduna was based on intelligence about terrorist activity in the area.
Recall that the Army recently carried out a drone attack on Ligarma community in the Igabi LGA of Kaduna State.
The attack was supposedly intended to eliminate the threat posed by the gathering of suspected terrorists observed through aerial surveillance.
According to a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, the attack took place around 10 pm on Sunday.
This was after the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle detachment spotted suspicious movement and gatherings exhibiting typical terrorist tactics.
With key infrastructure at risk, the kaduna attack was deemed necessary to prevent the terrorists from unleashing violence on innocent civilians.
Army Drone Attack Focused on Known Terrorist Hideout
Gen. Buba explained that the army drone attack kaduna specifically targeted the Ligarma community known to harbor terrorists and sympathizers.
He regretted civilian casualties as an unintended consequence.
He added that the Army tries to avoid such occurrence by clearly instructing at-risk communities to alert troops about their activities.
In his words;
For instance, communities are to always alert troops of their activities particularly when such a community is known to be infested with terrorists and their sympathisers.
These instructions are intended at enabling the military to distinguish between friendly and untoward activities.
Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba
This allows the military to distinguish friendly civilians from combatants when conducting operations like the the recent attack.
Ongoing Counter-Terrorism Efforts in Nigeria
The attack comes as part of ongoing efforts to decisively stamp out terrorism which has plagued parts of northern Nigeria.
Gen. Buba reiterated the military’s commitment to upholding international laws while cautiously pursuing innovative solutions to counter emerging terrorist threats.
This includes the use of advanced unmanned aerial capabilities as seen in the army drone attack kaduna.
Adapting Strategies Against Evolving Threat
As the insurgents blend into locals, sophisticated intelligence and weaponry will be pivotal for the army to eliminate terror cells.
This will further aid in minimizing collateral damage from operations like the kaduna attack.
Going forward, the military says it will find new doctrines to face the ever-evolving challenges posed by Nigerian terrorist factions.
