Do Tattoos Increase the Risk of Cancer?

Tattoos are beautiful works of art but they come with certain risks, such as skin infections, allergic reactions, and scarring. These risks can become more pronounced if the tattoo is done by an unlicensed artist or if the healing process is compromised.

But what about the risk of cancer from tattoos? While there is no concrete evidence of getting cancer from tattoos researchers think they may be linked.

A Swedish study from Lund University suggests a possible link between tattoos and malignant lymphoma but emphasizes the need for further research.

The study, involving nearly 12,000 people, found a 21% higher risk of this cancer among those with tattoos, although the connection is not definitive. Experts argue that the link is overstated and not supported by strong evidence.

Factors like chemicals in tattoo ink and low-grade inflammation are speculated as potential causes, but more research is needed to confirm these findings.

For example, some inks include azo, which is also used in car paint. Red inks have been studied for a long time, and older studies show they might increase the risk of liver cancer in rats.

Safety Tips

Before getting a tattoo, you may consider consulting a dermatologist for a skin check, particularly if the intended area has moles or other growths.

Tattoos can obscure skin issues, potentially making it harder to identify skin cancers. It’s advisable not to tattoo over moles.

After getting a tattoo from a trusted artist, make sure that a follow-up is done to check if there are adverse effects on the skin. Proper aftercare reduces the risk of infections and scarring. If you observe any signs of infection or changes in the color of your tattoo, contact your tattoo artist immediately.
