DSS and Police Seal Off Lagos State Assembly Offices
The Department of State Security (DSS) and Nigeria Police took action at the Lagos State House of Assembly by sealing the offices of the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk. By 10 am, armed security personnel had secured the premises at Alausa, Ikeja, carefully checking everyone who passed by.
Speaker Meranda arrived later in the morning around 11:15 am, amidst ongoing legal and political tensions. This move follows the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who has taken legal action against the Assembly, challenging his removal while he was in the United States.
Obasa’s lawsuit, filed in the Ikeja Division of the State High Court, seeks an expedited hearing. He argues that his impeachment was unconstitutional, conducted without proper protocol, and during an unauthorized Assembly recess.
The legal battle and the sealing of the Assembly offices have stirred up significant debate within the state’s political circles, particularly among members of the Governance Advisory Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.
The situation is further complicated by statements from national figures like Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, who openly criticized the Canadian government’s recent decision to deny visas to General Musa and other top military officers, using strong language that indicates high tensions within Nigerian politics at multiple levels.
As the lawsuit progresses, Obasa insists that his removal violates multiple sections of the Nigerian Constitution and the standing orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly. He is pushing for a quick resolution to ensure that legislative activities continue without disruption.
