Elumelu, ex-V.P Back Chessmaster Tunde Onakoya as 58-hr Marathon Kicks off

Tunde Onakoya began his quest to ease out the current holder of the longest chess marathon at New York’s Times Square last night.

The “Game Time”, as Onakoya captioned the start on his X account, will end at 8 pm on April 19.

The chessmaster hopes to play the whole length of 58 hours, and win every bit of the game—no stalemate.

Tony Elumelu first congratulated him on the expected win, and urged him on.

“Good luck on checkmating New York, @Tunde_OD, as you attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the longest Chess Marathon. Continue to inspire African youth—we stand firmly behind you,” the top banker wrote on X.

Another chess enthusiast and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo equally reacted to the kic- off.

“Dear Tunde, best of luck in Times Square as you strive to set the Guinness World Record for the Longest Chess Marathon! Your resilience and spirit inspire us all. Remember your own powerful words: ‘It is possible to do great things from a small place.’ Let the dynamic energy of Times Square amplify the greatness you, a proud Nigerian, bring to the chessboard. We’re all behind you—show the world the strength and determination you are made of! God bless you, @Tunde_OD.”

Onakoya’s quest comes packaged in a $1-million fundraiser to support global chess education for children.

Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway on November 11, 2018, current title holders, inked down 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds.
