FEC Approves Six Major Road Projects Across Nigeria
The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved six major road projects across different parts of the country, as the government pushes ahead with plans to improve transport infrastructure nationwide.
The approvals were announced by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Here are the six road and bridge projects approved by FEC:
Ibadan–Ife–Ilesa Road Reconstruction
This project covers the reconstruction of a 103-kilometre dual carriageway. According to David Umahi, the contract had been awarded by the previous administration, but work barely moved before it was reviewed and re-awarded. It is now valued at ₦427 billion.
Kano–Kongolam Road
This is a 132-kilometre road project linking Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states. The road was originally designed as an asphalt project, but it has now been upgraded to a three-lane concrete carriageway. The new design also includes solar streetlights and CCTV, with a contract sum of ₦334 billion.
Keffi–Nasarawa–Abaji Road Phase Two
This involves the rehabilitation of 129.3 kilometres of road aimed at improving movement between Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory. The project was approved at ₦203 billion.
Suleja–Minna Road Completion
FEC approved the completion of the remaining 71 kilometres of this dual carriageway. Umahi said the previous contractor was dropped after poor performance, with only 10 kilometres completed. The new approval is worth ₦91 billion.
Carter Bridge Project
This is not a standard road rehabilitation project but a major bridge intervention in Lagos. FEC approved the design, costing and preparation for the demolition of the existing Carter Bridge and the construction of a new one. The design phase alone was approved for ₦5.6 billion after officials concluded that the bridge could no longer be rehabilitated.
Abuja–Lokoja Road Reconstruction
This covers the reconstruction of an 86-kilometre section of the road. The project will be handled by multiple contractors, including Julius Berger, and will use reinforced concrete. It was approved for ₦146 billion.
