Federal High Court Stops Sanusi’s Reinstatement as Emir of Kano
The Federal High Court in Kano has issued a temporary order preventing the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano in an unexpected twist. This judicial decision has introduced a new layer of complexity to the already intricate political landscape of Kano state.
Justice Liman of the Federal High Court delivered the ruling late on Thursday, May 23, despite reportedly being in the United States at the time. The order specifically restrains the Kano state government from moving forward with its plans to reinstate Emir Sanusi.
Additionally, the court’s decision extends to prevent the abolition of four newly created emirates: Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano. This directive comes amidst a backdrop of social and political tensions surrounding the governance of these regions.
Just hours before the court’s order, Governor Abba Yusuf signed a new bill into law concerning the Kano Emirate, a move that was seen as paving the way for Sanusi’s return.
The signing ceremony, held at the Government House, was marked by the presence of notable officials, including the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Ismaila Falgore. Governor Yusuf described the occasion as “historic” and expressed gratitude to the assembly for fulfilling their legislative responsibilities.
The dramatic judicial intervention came on a day filled with anticipatory actions by the state government. Earlier today, Governor Yusuf announced that he would present the appointment letter to Emir Sanusi at Africa House, part of the Kano Government House, cementing his status as the returning emir.
This announcement was bolstered by statements from the governor’s senior special assistant on digital media, indicating a smooth transition expected at 9:00 AM.
The court’s directive to maintain the status quo has effectively put a pause on these proceedings, casting uncertainty over the immediate future of the Kano Emirate and its leadership. As the community and the nation watch closely, the legal and political drama continues to unfold, keeping the historic seat of the Kano Emir at the heart of public discourse and speculation.
