FG Declares Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1 Public Holidays

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26, 2025 as public holidays to mark Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It also announced Thursday, January 1, 2026 as a public holiday for the New Year celebration.

The announcement was conveyed by the Ministry of Interior through its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajayi, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In the statement, the minister extended seasonal greetings to Christians in Nigeria and around the world, as well as to Nigerians generally. He described the festive season as a period for reflection on values often associated with Christmas, including love, peace, humility, and sacrifice, and said such values remain important for strengthening unity, tolerance, and harmony across the country.

He also urged Nigerians, regardless of religion or ethnic background, to use the season to pray for peace, security, and national progress, while supporting broader efforts aimed at development and cohesion. Beyond the goodwill message, the minister appealed for moderation and responsibility throughout the celebrations.

With increased movement and public gatherings typically recorded during the holidays, he encouraged citizens to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies to help ensure a peaceful and safe festive period.

He added that Christmas and the New Year offer Nigerians an opportunity to strengthen bonds, show compassion to one another, and renew commitment to nation-building.

The minister concluded by wishing all Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
