FG Increases Corps Members’ Allowance to N77,000
The federal government has announced an increase in the monthly allowance for corps members to N77,000, effective July 2024.
This decision was detailed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by the Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta. The increase aligns with the recent enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
Prior to this increase, corps members received a monthly allowance of N33,000, which was set following the minimum wage adjustment to N30,000 in 2019. The new minimum wage has been set at N70,000 as per the legislation signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on July 29, 2024.
Speculation regarding the increment in corps members’ pay followed the approval of the new minimum wage, with NYSC management clarifying that the Federal Government would determine any changes to the allowance.
In a statement released by Caroline Embu, the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, it was revealed that the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, had previously visited Mr. Ekpo Nta to advocate for better welfare for corps members.
Brigadier-General Ahmed expressed gratitude towards the government for this increase, noting that it will not only provide relief to the corps members but also enhance their morale and motivate them to contribute more effectively during their service to the nation.
