FG Lists Fake UK/US-Affiliated Universities Operating Illegally in Nigeria
The Federal Government has closed several unlicensed universities operating in Nigeria while claiming links to the United Kingdom and the United States. The National Universities Commission (NUC) stated that the schools were operating illegally and issuing degrees that are not recognised in Nigeria.
In a public notice, the NUC described the affected institutions as “degree mills.” It said they violated the Education (National Minimum Standards, etc.) Act, Cap E3, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, by running programmes without approval.
The Commission warned parents, guardians and prospective students to check accreditation before seeking admission anywhere in the country.
List of schools declared illegal and shut down
- Christians of Charity American University of Science & Technology, Nkpor, Anambra State (and any other “campuses”)
- Collumbus University, “UK”, operating anywhere in Nigeria
- Tiu International University, “UK”, operating anywhere in Nigeria
- Pebbles University, “UK”, operating anywhere in Nigeria
- London External Studies “UK”, operating anywhere in Nigeria
- EC-Council University, “USA”, Ikeja, Lagos Study Centre
- Concept College/Universities (“London”)
- Houdegbe North American University “campuses” in Nigeria
- Irish University Business School, “London”, operating anywhere in Nigeria
- Pacific Western University, “Denver, Colorado”, Owerri Study Centre
- Evangel University of America & Chudick Management (and any other “campuses”)
The NUC noted that many of these outfits use foreign labels to deceive the public. Any degrees issued by them will not be accepted for jobs, NYSC, or further studies.
The Commission said many of these operators hide behind foreign labels to deceive the public. It stressed that any certificates issued by the institutions will not be recognised for jobs, NYSC or further studies.
Before applying or paying any fees, students are advised to confirm that the NUC accredits both the university and the specific programme.
Applicants should ask the school for its approval details and cross-check directly with the Commission. “Study centres,” “affiliate campuses” and similar terms are red flags unless the NUC has expressly approved them to award degrees in Nigeria.
The NUC explained that it regulates university education by approving new institutions, accrediting programmes, monitoring quality and advising government on policy, and that shutting down illegal providers is part of its mandate to protect students from fake qualifications.
Separately, the Federal Government will begin nationwide verification of academic certificates for all workers and applicants in ministries, departments, agencies and higher institutions from October 6, 2025.
The exercise will be conducted through the National Credential Verification Service under the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) programme.
