FG Starts New Food Production Program
The Federal Government has kicked off a new initiative to boost food production across Nigeria, aiming to secure the nation’s food supply. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, is dubbed ‘Operation Empty The Stores.’
Here’s what’s happening: The government plans to open its vast storerooms and distribute agricultural tools and supplies directly to farmers everywhere. This means more seeds, fertilizers, and farming equipment will soon be in the hands of those who need them the most.
Marcus Olaniyi Ogunbiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, made the announcement during a workshop in Abuja. The event, themed ‘Building Partnership with The Media for Food Security,’ brought together officials and journalists to discuss ways to collaborate for greater transparency and engagement in agricultural initiatives.
During his speech, Ogunbiyi emphasized that these resources are meant for immediate use, not to sit in storage. By equipping farmers nationwide, the initiative seeks to not only increase food production but also to reinforce the importance of agriculture in stabilizing and growing the economy amidst global economic challenges.
Further support for this initiative is evident in the government’s financial commitment. The 2025 budget includes substantial investments for land development and agricultural enhancements. This includes clearing land for new farming activities, preparing land on existing farms, and improving infrastructure like transportation for farm supervisors.
Additionally, a new farmer registry backed by a National Identification Number (NIN) has been launched to ensure farmers gain easier access to land and governmental support, safeguarding them from potential fraud.
