Former President Muhammadu Buhari to Be Buried Today in Daura

President Bola Tinubu and other past Nigerian leaders will gather in Daura today to say goodbye to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who will be buried following Islamic traditions.

Vice President Kashim Shettima brought Buhari’s body from London, where he died on Sunday around 4:30 p.m. Tinubu had asked Shettima to handle this task.

Presidency officials said Buhari’s body would arrive in Nigeria early Monday morning and go straight to Daura, his hometown in Katsina State, for burial. Islamic burials happen quickly, so things are being done fast.

President Tinubu and other important guests are expected to arrive in Daura soon after the body. Leaders from other West African countries will also visit to show respect.

Tinubu shared the sad news with the country on Sunday. He called Buhari a “patriot, soldier, and statesman,” and ordered that flags be flown at half-mast for seven days across Nigeria. He also planned an urgent government meeting for Tuesday, July 15.

Buhari was once a military ruler (1984–1985) and later became an elected president (2015–2023). He had been in London since June for medical treatment. His health was a major topic during his time as president.

Many famous Nigerians sent their tributes. Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo praised Buhari’s honesty, leadership, and dedication. Babangida called him a “humble patriot,” while Obasanjo said Nigeria needed his wisdom. Osinbajo remembered Buhari’s strong focus on serving the people.

In Kaduna, Buhari’s house was quiet with soldiers standing guard. But in Daura, many people came to mourn and show respect.

Several state governors, like those from Kwara, Imo, and Gombe, praised Buhari as a man of great integrity.

President Tinubu promised that Buhari’s burial would honour his life and service. He also sent prayers and love to Buhari’s wife, Aisha, his family, and the people of Daura and Katsina State.

Tinubu said, “We remember his service, honour his legacy, and pray for him. May his life inspire others to serve with courage and love.”
