Hijack ’93’ by Play Network Hits Netflix’s Top 10 with 3.2 Million Views

Play Network Studios’ latest movie, “Hijack ’93,” has quickly become popular on Netflix. In its first week, starting October 25, it got 3.2 million views and ranked 9th worldwide.

This makes it the fourth Nollywood movie in 2024 to reach Netflix’s Top 10.

The movie joins “House of Ga’a,” “Òlòtūré: The Journey – Season 1,” and “Tokunbo” in a year that has seen more Nollywood films being watched around the world.

A Gripping Story from Nigeria

Directed by Femi Oyeniran from the UK and produced by Play Network Studios and Native Media, “Hijack ’93” is based on a real event from 1993.

Four young Nigerians hijacked a plane to draw attention to a big political issue—the cancellation of what was believed to be a fair presidential election won by Chief MKO Abiola.

The film’s producer, Charles Okpaleke, aims to blend real-life issues with quality storytelling. His past successes include well-known films like “Living in Bondage: Breaking Free” and “Glamour Girls.”

Featuring New and Known Actors

The film stars both experienced and new actors, making it rich and exciting. Veterans like Bob Manuel and John Dumelo appear alongside newer talents like Sharon Ooja, Nancy Isime, and Jemima Osunde.

Adam Garba, Allison Emmanuel, Oluwaseyi Akinola, and Nnamdi Agbo bring the story of the young activists to life.

“Hijack ’93” is not just popular; it shows how films can bring different countries together. Supported by the British Film Institute and the UK Department of International Trade, this collaboration helps share Nigerian stories globally.

As more Nollywood films gain international attention, “Hijack ’93” highlights the appeal of Nigerian cinema to a wide, diverse audience.
