How Aliko Dangote Regained His Spot as Africa’s Richest

Nigeria’s business magnate, Aliko Dangote, has once again emerged as Africa’s richest person, a prestigious ranking by Forbes Real-Time Billionaires. This achievement coincides with a major milestone – the impending operation of his $20-billion Dangote Oil Refinery, poised to transform the African petroleum landscape.

Dangote, renowned for holding Forbes’ title as Africa’s wealthiest individual for a decade, possesses significant holdings in Dangote Cement and has interests in the oil refining sector. In May, he inaugurated the largest oil refinery in Africa, located in Nigeria, with a production capability of 650,000 barrels per day at full capacity.

The Forbes List, a globally recognized authority on wealth and rankings, witnessed a brief shift when South African tycoon Johann Rupert momentarily surpassed Aliko Dangote. However, as of January 8, Dangote’s net worth saw an increase to $10.1 billion, edging out Rupert’s $10 billion. This fluctuation in rankings underscores the dynamic nature of global business. Forbes noted Dangote’s 191st position worldwide, contrasting Rupert’s 197th.

Dangote’s strategic business moves

A significant contributor is his $20-billion Dangote Oil Refinery. This ambitious project, owned by Africa’s wealthiest man Aliko Dangote, is ready to commence test runs, a crucial phase in its development. This week marks the commencement of test runs, following the receipt of a crucial shipment of crude oil. This final batch, the sixth of one million barrels, was supplied by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), marking a significant step in the refinery’s journey.

The refinery’s journey began with its first crude shipment a month ago and has since received successive deliveries, aligning with its operational timeline. The upcoming initiation of the crude distillation unit is a key phase in the refinery’s process. A senior executive revealed to Reuters that this step is set to start this week, paving the way for the refinery to begin regular crude purchases and the commissioning of other departments.

What to note about the Aliko Dangote refinery

The Dangote Oil Refinery, inaugurated in May 2023, faced initial operational delays. However, with these recent developments, it stands ready to meet Nigeria’s refined petroleum needs. Boasting a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the refinery is expected to generate $27 billion annually at full capacity. It aims to fulfill 100% of Nigeria’s demand for various refined products, with additional export capacity.

Initially focusing on diesel, aviation fuel, and gas, the refinery will later expand to petrol production. Licensed in November 2023 to refine over 300,000 barrels of Nigerian crude daily, it aims to process 350,000 barrels per day initially, with plans to scale up to 650,000 barrels.

Conclusively, Aliko Dangote’s reclamation of the top spot on the Forbes Africa list is more than just a personal achievement; it signals a transformative era for Africa’s petroleum industry. The Dangote Oil Refinery, nearing operation, stands as a testament to Dangote’s vision and commitment, promising to reshape not only Nigeria’s but Africa’s energy dynamics.
