How Much Do House of Rep Lawmakers Earn?

It has been stated that the House of Representatives is firmly dedicated to upholding the resolution passed on July 18, which mandated a 50% reduction in members’ salaries for six months.

In a recent press briefing, House spokesman Akin Rotimi addressed inaccuracies in media reports about lawmakers’ salaries. He clarified that the monthly salary of a House of Representatives member is ₦600,000, contrary to rumors of ₦900,000.

This clarification comes amidst various media claims suggesting discrepancies in salary figures, with some reports incorrectly stating a monthly salary of ₦936,979.

“The House of Representatives has been inundated by some media outlets reporting claims of discrepancies in members’ salaries, suggesting that we received 100 per cent of our July salaries. The report claimed that our salary amounted to N936,979,” Rotimi stated, according to The Nation.

Rotimi also highlighted a specific case of a member who showed his salary on a television program, noting that this was an unusual situation because the member joined the House much later through a court decision, after the standard onboarding process.

Commitment to 50% Salary Reduction amidst economic challenges

In a bold move reflecting responsiveness to economic strains on the nation, the House House spokesman Akin Rotimi reaffirmed the commitment to the resolution made on July 18, which prescribed a 50% reduction in the salaries of House members for six months. This measure aims to contribute to alleviating economic hardship.

Rotimi acknowledged the delay in implementing the resolution for the month of July, stating, “We acknowledge and regret that this resolution was not implemented by the bureaucracy as intended for the month of July.” The formal instructions to enact this salary cut were issued on July 23, subsequent to the formal approval of legislative decisions during the previous plenary session.

He explained that the delay was a result of necessary administrative steps and coordination with financial bodies. Rotimi has assured that instructions to adjust the salaries have been firmly issued and will be strictly enforced in the coming months to ensure the fulfillment of this commitment.

Addressing concerns raised by some media reports about the need for investigation, Rotimi clarified, “There is nothing to investigate, as some media houses reported. The House’s stance on this matter has been clearly communicated to journalists who reached out for clarification.”

He urged the public to remain patient and reassured them of the House’s dedication to uphold its financial commitments and efforts to maintain the trust and confidence of Nigerians.
