How Much is MTN’s New 200% Increment Data Plan?

MTN Nigeria has increased the prices of its data plans following the recent approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to raise telecom service costs by 50%.

This change has sparked public outcry, as many Nigerians worry about how the price hike will affect their internet usage and communication expenses.

With this new adjustment, several MTN data plans have seen significant increases. Below is a breakdown of the new prices:

New MTN Data Prices

  • 15GB (Weekly Plan) – Previously N2,000, now N6,000
  • 1.8GB (Monthly Plan) – Now N1,500, replacing the previous 1.5GB plan that cost N1,000
  • 20GB (Monthly Plan) – Increased from N5,500 to N7,500
  • 15GB (Monthly Plan) – Previously N4,500, now N6,500
  • 100GB (2/3-Month Plan) – Now 90GB for N25,000, instead of 100GB for N20,000
  • 160GB (2/3-Month Plan) – Now 150GB for N40,000, instead of 160GB for N30,000

For users who subscribe to long-term plans, the price jump is even more noticeable:

  • 90-day 1.5TB Plan – Previously N150,000, now N240,000
  • 600GB (90-day Plan) – Increased from N75,000 to N120,000

What Led to the Increase?

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved the tariff adjustment on January 20, 2025, marking the first major telecom price hike in over a decade. The NCC stated that the increase was necessary to help telecom providers invest in better infrastructure, expand network coverage, and improve service quality.

While MTN is the first to implement the new prices, other telecom providers like Airtel and Globacom are expected to follow suit soon. This means that Nigerians should brace for higher costs across all networks.

Public reaction

Since the announcement, many MTN users have expressed frustration over the price hike, especially considering the current economic challenges in the country. Social media has been flooded with complaints, with many users calling on the government to intervene.

The sharp rise in data costs may force some customers to reduce their internet usage, affecting businesses, students, and individuals who rely on affordable data for communication and work.

What’s next?

As other networks prepare to adjust their prices, customers might have to explore alternative data-saving measures, such as using Wi-Fi where available, switching to more affordable plans, or limiting heavy data usage.

For now, MTN users will have to adapt to these new prices, with hopes that service quality improves to justify the higher costs.
