How to Build an AI Economy in Nigeria
Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be a huge breakthrough for Nigeria, much like electricity and computers have been for the world. Brad Smith from Microsoft has shown how past technologies have changed economies and how AI could do the same for Nigeria.
Smith points out that the big changes in economies come from using new technologies widely, not just creating them. For example, when electricity was used more broadly, it greatly improved economies. AI has the same potential for industries all across Nigeria.
Key Areas Nigeria Needs to Focus On
Understanding the Technology
AI works in layers, starting with essential infrastructure like data centers, similar to how power plants are needed for electricity. Nigeria needs to invest in building a strong AI infrastructure to support the growth of AI technologies.
Planning Finances
Setting up the basics for AI can be expensive, but creating AI applications can be more affordable and open up new business opportunities. Nigeria will need plans for funding these projects, possibly using both private and public money.
Developing Business Models
It’s important for Nigeria to develop business models that can change as technology and market needs change. This helps ensure long-term success as AI becomes more common.
Educating and Training
Just as new technologies in the past needed new types of education, AI needs people to learn new skills, from basic understanding to more complex design and engineering. Nigeria should have national strategies to educate everyone from students to workers.
Making AI Effective and Accepted
For AI to work well and be welcomed in Nigeria, it must be seen as helpful and safe. This involves making sure AI respects privacy, is safe digitally, and is used responsibly. Addressing environmental concerns is also key to keeping trust in AI technologies.
Learning from the Past
Reflecting on Thomas Edison’s introduction of electric light to Manhattan, Smith reminds us that despite great technological advances, many places, including parts of Nigeria, still don’t have basic services like electricity. This should motivate Nigeria to do better with AI, aiming to achieve things that past generations couldn’t.
