How to Enjoy Your Sallah Without Overdoing It

Sallah is a beautiful time of celebration, a season for prayers, family, generosity, and of course, delicious food. From tender ram meat to rich rice dishes and endless sweet treats, it’s easy to find yourself piling up your plate and eating to your heart’s content.

But while enjoying these festive meals is part of the joy, it’s also important to eat in a way that leaves you feeling good afterwards, not bloated, sluggish, or sick. So how can you strike that balance?

Here are some simple ways to enjoy your Sallah without going overboard.

Start light

After weeks of lighter eating and fasting, suddenly diving into heavy, oily dishes can shock your system. It helps to ease your body back in. Begin your day with something light  think fruits, smoothies, or a bowl of oats. This will prepare your stomach for the bigger meals to come.

And don’t forget water. Drinking water throughout the day helps your digestion and keeps you feeling refreshed. Spread your meals out over the day instead of tackling one massive plate at once.

Make small adjustments to your favourite meals. You don’t need to skip all your favourites, just tweak them. Instead of frying all your meats, try grilling or baking them. Use less oil when preparing stews and let the natural flavours of stock and spices shine through.

When it comes to drinks, try healthier options like homemade zobo or tigernut drinks instead of sugary sodas. Little changes can go a long way in making your meals healthier without taking away the flavour.

Bring in the veggies

One of the easiest ways to make your festive plate healthier is to add vegetables. Grilled plantains, coleslaw, cucumber slices, sautéed veggies, they all bring colour, fibre, and freshness to your meal. You can even try adding veggie skewers alongside your suya or roasted meats.

Not only do vegetables help balance out heavier dishes, but they also fill you up in a good way, so you’re less likely to overeat.

Eat mindfully

It’s tempting to say “yes” to every plate that comes your way during Sallah, but remember this is not a competition! Start with smaller portions, take your time to chew and savour each bite, and listen to your body.

Pause between servings and check in with how full you feel. And always drink water in between meals, it will help you stay hydrated and curb unnecessary snacking.

Save space for actual meals

Sweet treats like chin-chin, cakes, and small chops are part of the fun, but don’t let them replace your main meals. Choose a few favourites to enjoy and skip the rest.

Also, balance out all that food with a bit of movement, take a walk after meals or dance during the celebration.

It’s a great way to keep your energy up and help your body digest all the good food you’ve enjoyed. Food is a big part of the celebration and you should absolutely enjoy it. Just remember to aim for balance. A little mindfulness while eating can help you fully savour the season without discomfort or regret.
