How to Stay Safe from Stampede in Crowded Places
After several dangerous stampedes in places like Ibadan, Okija, and Abuja, it’s clear that we need to talk about how to avoid these dangers in large gatherings
Large gatherings need careful planning to avoid stampedes and here are some helpful tips based on what we’ve learned
Know the Venue
Familiarise yourself with the event layout ahead of time. Identify all possible exits and plan your route to and from these points upon arrival.
Stay Aware
Constantly assess the crowd’s density and mood. Keep an eye on any changes that might indicate increasing risks, such as people starting to push or areas becoming too cramped.
Choose Your Location Wisely
Avoid areas known for becoming overcrowded, such as near the stage, food stands, or main walkways. Opt for spots near the edges of the crowd where you have more control over your movement.
Maintain Personal Space
While it can be challenging in a crowded event, keep some distance between yourself and others. If you feel the space getting too tight, politely make your way to a less crowded area.
React Quickly to Falls
If you fall, do your best to get up quickly. If that’s not possible, try to move to a safer position, such as up against a wall or a sturdier structure away from the movement of the crowd.
Follow Official Directions
Always listen to and follow the directions given by event staff or public safety officers. They are trained to handle such situations and can guide you to safety.
Remain Calm
Keeping a calm demeanor can prevent panic, which is crucial in avoiding a stampede. Take deep breaths and move deliberately toward an exit if necessary.
Pre-arrange Meeting Points
If you are attending the event with family or friends, set up a meeting point for everyone in case you get separated. Choose a location that is easy to find and away from the crowded areas.
Heed Announcements
Pay close attention to public address announcements, as they will provide you with important safety information and instructions during the event.
Identification and Medical Information
Carry some form of identification and any important medical information. This can be crucial in helping emergency personnel assist you more efficiently if needed.
