If You’re 40+, Experts say this Antioxidant is the Key to Longer Life

Coenzyme Q10, commonly known as CoQ10, is a staple in the realm of anti-aging skincare and health supplements, celebrated for its potent antioxidant properties. But beyond its buzz in beauty circles, what exactly is CoQ10, and how does it benefit our health?

To take a closer look into the antioxidant, Shabir Daya, a pharmacist and the brains behind the supplement brand DoSe, who also co-founded the UK-based wellness and beauty retailer Victoria Health gives us more insight.

What Exactly is CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a naturally occurring antioxidant found in every cell of the human body. It plays a critical role in energy production. “It is essential for generating the energy our bodies need for cell growth and maintenance,” Daya explains. This vital compound helps our cells perform better and protects them from the oxidative damage caused by free radicals.

CoQ10 is particularly concentrated in organs that require a lot of energy like the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. Daya notes that CoQ10 is crucial for muscle function due to its mild blood-thinning properties, which improve circulation and oxygenation throughout the body.

For the skin, which is the body’s largest organ, CoQ10 supports healthy cell growth and offers protection against photoaging from UV rays.

Why Should You Consider CoQ10 Supplements?

As we age, our bodies naturally produce less CoQ10. While it is present in small amounts in foods like meat and fish, the levels in our bodies decrease with age.

By the time we reach 40, we typically have about half the CoQ10 that we did in our youth. “Taking a CoQ10 supplement can be beneficial, especially for those prone to conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or certain cancers,” advises Daya.

He specifically recommends ubiquinol supplements, an active form of CoQ10, for anyone over 40, those experiencing low energy levels, or anyone interested in maintaining youthful skin and overall health.

How Much CoQ10 Should You Take?

The amount of CoQ10 needed can vary, but typically, a daily dose of 100 mg of ubiquinol is sufficient for most adults. This dosage helps replenish declining levels and supports the body’s overall health and well-being as we age.

CoQ10 supplements are also often recommended for people with specific health conditions such as heart failure, high blood pressure, and neurodegenerative diseases, who may have lower natural levels of CoQ10.
