I’m Running for President in 2027 – Atiku Abubakar
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has put to rest speculation that he might step away from the 2027 presidential race, reaffirming his commitment to contest the election.
Speaking with his media aide, Professor Tunde Olusunle, Atiku clarified that reports suggesting he may withdraw were inaccurate. “I did not issue that statement,” he said. “When people represent me at events, we usually align on my views, but in this case, there was no consultation with me. Professor Olateju was not speaking on my behalf.”
The confusion arose after Professor Ola Olateju of Achievers University, who represented Atiku at a political event in Lagos marking defections to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), suggested that Atiku’s priority is national development over personal ambition.
Olateju said, “Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. It’s not about being President at all costs. He wants a government that works for Nigerians, and that’s why some of us support him.”
For Atiku, however, the presidency remains central to his mission of steering Nigeria out of its current crisis. “I will run in 2027,” he declared. “Our nation is in urgent need of rescue. The level of poverty, suffering, and institutional decay is unacceptable. The deceit, loss of values, unchecked corruption, and absence of accountability must concern every patriot. I am offering myself to lead the reclamation and reconstruction of our traumatised homeland.”
Regarding the ADC platform, Atiku emphasised that the coalition he is building is designed to galvanise popular support and deliver a decisive victory in 2027. Responding to critics pointing to the party’s modest performance in recent bye-elections, he noted that a new political platform cannot be expected to create immediate upsets. “ADC is leading a mass movement that will surprise many. We will challenge the status quo and leave doubters dumbstruck,” Olusunle quoted him as saying.
With this clarification, Atiku has made it clear that his focus is firmly on reviving Nigeria and offering a government that delivers for its citizens, while preparing to challenge the entrenched political establishment in the 2027 elections.
