INEC to Start 2027 Voter Registration on August 18: What You Need to Know
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will open its next voter registration exercise on August 18, 2025, in preparation for the 2027 elections.
This exercise aims to update Nigeria’s voters’ register, making sure every qualified citizen can take part in choosing the country’s leaders. Here is how the process will work and what you need to do.
Online Pre‑Registration Opens August 18
To reduce long queues at local offices, INEC is introducing an online pre‑registration step. From August 18, you can visit cvr.inecnigeria.org to fill out the basic form.
You will need to provide your full name, date of birth, state and local government area, and a valid means of identification, such as your National Identification Number (NIN). Completing this online step does not finalise your registration but secures you a slot at your local registration centre.
In‑Person Registration Starts August 25
One week after online pre‑registration begins, on August 25, all INEC offices in local government areas and designated centres will open for the physical capture of your data. You must visit in person between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
During your visit, INEC staff will take your photograph, fingerprints, and signature using the Card Reader and the new Computerised Voter Registration (CVR) kits. Once your details have been captured, you will receive a slip confirming your application.
Who Can Register or Update Their Details
This exercise is not just for first‑time voters. INEC has made it clear that it will capture or update any of the following:
- Citizens who turned 18 since the last registration in 2023.
- Nigerians who were abroad or ineligible during the previous exercise.
- Voters whose Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were lost, damaged, or contain errors.
- Registered voters who need to transfer their card to a different ward or polling unit, even across states.
This inclusive approach ensures that no one is left out because of past errors or changes in residence.
Registration Is Free—Beware of Scammers
INEC emphasises that there is no fee to register or to update your voter information. Any individual or group requesting payment or offering to speed up your application is acting illegally.
To avoid being defrauded, always register at official INEC centres and report any suspicious request for money to the nearest police station or INEC office.
Why This Exercise Matters
A credible voters’ register is the backbone of free and fair elections. By capturing accurate data now, INEC aims to prevent problems like double registration, underage voting, and vote buying. The updated register will also help voters receive their PVCs on time, reducing confusion and delays on election day in 2027.
How to Prepare
Before you go for in‑person registration, gather the required documents:
- Proof of Age: Your birth certificate or NIN slip.
- Proof of Residence: A utility bill, tenancy agreement, or voter’s card bearing your current address.
- Means of Identification: National ID card, driver’s license, or international passport.
Arrive early at the registration centre, and remember to carry the slip from your online pre‑registration if you completed that step.
