Internet Fraud by Yahoo Boys Responsible for Tougher Visa Rules – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has cautioned that a rising wave of internet fraud in Nigeria, often tied to individuals known as “Yahoo Boys,” is triggering stricter visa restrictions for law-abiding citizens travelling abroad.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede spoke at an event in Port Harcourt organised by the Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Security and Safety Affairs.

He emphasised that, beyond economic losses, acts of cybercrime, money laundering, and economic sabotage are damaging Nigeria’s global reputation. This deterioration leads to foreign governments imposing tougher travel requirements on innocent Nigerians.

Olukoyede stated that such fraudulent behaviour not only jeopardises the future of those directly involved but also hampers infrastructure development, job creation, and economic growth. He urged Nigerian youths to steer away from cybercrime and instead invest their energies in digital innovation, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and the creative industries.

In a stern reminder, the EFCC chairman said, “Fraud is not success. It is a trap. Easy come, easy go. Many who follow the path of Yahoo Yahoo end up losing their freedom, reputation, and future.

The law is catching up with them, and digital footprints never disappear. Do not destroy your tomorrow with shortcuts today.”

The commission has committed to intensifying public sensitisation, enforcement measures, and community collaborations to curb cybercrime.

This warning comes in the wake of adjusted U.S. visa policies that now reduce the validity of certain non-immigrant visas, such as B1, B2, F, and J categories, to three months and limit them to single entry. The move is partly attributed to growing concerns over cybercrime linked to Nigerians.
