Is the Labour Party all in for Peter Obi in 2027?

The Labour Party (LP) has made it clear that Peter Obi remains its top choice for the 2027 presidential election. Obi, who ran in 2023 under the party’s banner, may have finished third, but he gained massive support, especially from young Nigerians who wanted a new political direction.

Now, as the next election draws closer, LP leaders are rallying behind him once again, hoping to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

LP stands firm behind Obi

In a recent interview on Politics Today, a program on Channels Television, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, confidently stated that the party is preparing for a strong comeback with Obi in 2027.

“Tinubu is not just going to have it easy in 2027,” Arabambi said. “We are coming back with Peter Obi, so they know we mean business.”

This statement reinforces the party’s determination to remain a key player in the political space, despite facing internal challenges.

Internal conflicts and political shifts

While the party has publicly expressed support for Obi, not everyone within LP is on the same page. Recently, Kenneth Okonkwo, a popular actor and politician, resigned from the party, citing concerns about its leadership. His exit sparked debates about whether LP is truly united behind Obi.

However, Arabambi dismissed Okonkwo’s departure, claiming it was insignificant.

“His resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish,” Arabambi said, adding that Okonkwo was allegedly working in favor of the ruling APC.

Despite these disagreements, LP insists that it remains a strong and stable party, with no leadership crisis.

“There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party,” Arabambi emphasized. “Labour Party is not going into extinction. That is just a figment of our detractors’ imagination.”

What’s next for Peter Obi and LP?

With the 2027 election still a few years away, there are many uncertainties. Will Peter Obi secure the full backing of LP without internal distractions? Can the party overcome its internal divisions and mount a serious challenge against Tinubu’s government?

For now, one thing is clear, Obi remains at the center of LP’s plans. Whether the party can stay united behind him until 2027 is the real question.
