Is the NLC Right in Accusing Tinubu’s Administration of Intimidation?

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has voiced concerns over what it terms a “consistent pattern of intimidation and brutality” against labor unions by President Tinubu’s administration. This statement came through a communique released following their 10th Emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, signed the communique, stating aggressive actions and deceit since the current government assumed office in May 2023. One of the more severe incidents mentioned was the recent raid on the NLC headquarters in Abuja, described as a “coordinated attack to silence” the organisation, a vital voice for the populace.

During the meeting, the NEC strongly appealed to the government to ensure the safety and freedom of Nigerian workers and trade unions. They emphasised that these groups must operate without fear of harm or obstruction.

The communique clarified that the NLC had not participated in the recent protests sparked by economic hardships but supported the cause. It also called for the government to withdraw security forces from locations like the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) offices, where they are said to be stationed unlawfully.

Further, the NLC dismissed police justifications for the headquarters invasion as insubstantial and demanded a rapid and transparent explanation from the government. The union also mourned the loss of lives during protests, calling for accountability from security forces and a National Day of Mourning.

Additionally, the NLC demanded the immediate release of detained trade unionists and activists, urging the government to abandon what it sees as efforts to criminalise protest and suppress dissenting views, particularly targeting those with leftist ideologies.

The union proposed an inclusive conclave to address Nigeria’s pressing issues directly poverty, hunger, inflation, insecurity, and general dissatisfaction with government policies rather than continuing a blame game.

Lastly, the NLC warned of the transient nature of peace without justice and has initiated a forensic audit of its national headquarters to ensure its safety and suitability for continued use, signalling a temporary cessation of its use to avoid potential disasters.
