Israel vs Iran: What’s Really Going On?

The tension between Israel and Iran has just taken a dangerous new turn. In the early hours of today, Friday, June 13, 2025, Israel launched surprise airstrikes on several parts of Iran, targeting military facilities and nuclear sites.

The attack, which shook at least six Iranian cities, has now pushed the Middle East closer to full-scale war.

What sparked the new conflict?

This isn’t the first time both nations have clashed, but things escalated after Iran fired hundreds of drones and missiles into Israel earlier this week.

In response, Israel launched a major military operation, hitting Iranian cities like Tehran, Natanz, Tabriz, Arak, Isfahan, and Kermanshah.

Israel says the strikes were aimed at stopping Iran’s nuclear weapons programme. In a video address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed the attacks were carefully planned and focused on missile factories and nuclear research centres.

Who were the victims?

The Israeli strikes were deadly. Among those killed were high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists. These included:

  • Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s army chief and head of its missile programme.
  • Hossein Salami, commander of the Revolutionary Guard Corps.
  • Gholamali Rashid, top military commander.
  • Nuclear experts like Ahmad Reza Zolfaqar, Fereydoun Abbasi, and Mohammad Mahdi also lost their lives.

Apart from the military losses, civilians were also caught in the crossfire. Reports online show photos of damaged homes and buildings, especially in Iran’s capital, Tehran.

How has Iran reacted?

Iran is furious. Its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned that Israel will “pay a bitter and painful price.”

He also promised that Iran’s armed forces will not let the attack go unanswered. Right now, both countries seem prepared for more attacks, and people around the world are watching anxiously.

Why this matters to everyone and what’s next?

Any war between Israel and Iran affects more than just those two countries. This could lead to higher oil prices, especially since both nations are involved in important global trade routes.

It also risks dragging in other powers like the United States, who have close ties with Israel.

Nobody knows for sure. Both sides have made threats, and with the killing of key figures in Iran, emotions are running high. For now, it’s a waiting game, but one filled with fear, uncertainty, and global concern.

This latest episode is a strong reminder of how fast things can go from tense to explosive in the Middle East.
