Japa: Australia Makes Visa Rules Stricter as More Students Enrol

Australia has recently revised its visa regulations for international students due to a significant increase in enrollments. These new rules aim to maintain the quality of education and address concerns over visa misuse, as international students continue to choose Australian universities for their higher education.

As reported by TravelBiz, there has been a significant surge in the number of international students enrolling in Australian universities.

Data from International Education Data reveals a 16% increase in enrollments as of April 2024, compared to the same period in 2019, totaling 780,104 students.

Changes in visa regulations 

The Australian government has rolled out stricter requirements for student visas. Key changes include heightened English language proficiency standards. Previously, lower scores on language tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE were acceptable. 

Now, the government demands higher scores to ensure students can fully engage in their educational courses and daily life in Australia. This measure, while ensuring better integration into the academic environment, could pose challenges for non-native English speakers.

Additionally, there are tougher requirements for proving financial stability. Students must now show increased proof of funds to cover their living expenses, tuition, and travel. 

This is part of a broader effort to filter out non-genuine applications and preserve the integrity of the student visa program.

With the rise in application fees to AUD 1,600 and stricter criteria for temporary graduate visas, prospective students must carefully prepare their applications. Those affected include graduates 35 years and under, as the two-year visa extension has been removed. 

The new Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria require detailed personal statements and evidence of plans to return home after studies, emphasizing the need for thorough preparation.
