JAPA: How President Tinubu Plans to Stop Doctors From Travelling Abroad
President Bola Tinubu has approved a new policy aimed at keeping healthcare professionals in Nigeria instead of them moving abroad for work.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, shared on his X handle that this policy is more than a quick fix it’s a comprehensive strategy to manage and reverse the ongoing loss of healthcare workers.
Prof Pate stated, “This afternoon, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in-Council, approved a crucial policy that will redefine how we manage our healthcare workforce in Nigeria. This policy tackles major challenges in our healthcare system and shows the President’s commitment to strengthening it.”
The policy aims to create a supportive environment for healthcare workers in Nigeria, ensuring they are well-supported, fairly paid, and effectively utilised.
The departure of many Nigerian healthcare workers for better opportunities has put a strain on those who remain, due to increased workloads and inadequate working conditions.
Building a Stronger Healthcare Workforce
A key component of the policy is the Nigeria Human Health Resource Programme, which will regularly review and improve working conditions, particularly in disadvantaged areas, to ensure healthcare workers are valued and fairly compensated.
Prof Pate added, “This policy will enhance professional growth and make sure health services are efficient and widespread through the use of advanced health technologies like Electronic Medical Records and telehealth.”
Developing Skills and Retaining Talent
The policy also focuses on capacity building through ongoing professional development and international training, preparing Nigerian healthcare workers with modern skills.
Furthermore, it simplifies the process for Nigerian health professionals returning from abroad, offering them attractive incentives to reintegrate into the national health system.
Prof Pate noted, “We are setting up agreements with other countries to ensure that when health workers are exchanged, it benefits Nigeria and respects the rights of our professionals.” The policy also prioritises regular health checks, mental health support, and reasonable working hours to support a healthy work-life balance.
