June 12: President Tinubu to Address the Nation and NASS
President Bola Tinubu will mark the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations with a live nationwide broadcast on Thursday, June 12, at 7:00 a.m.
According to sources within the Presidency, this address will outline his administration’s priorities and policy direction for the next two years.
Following the broadcast, Mr. Tinubu is scheduled to speak to a joint session of the National Assembly, reaffirming his commitment to legislative collaboration. Insiders also hint that the President may use the occasion to grant state pardons to deserving Nigerians, alongside other significant announcements.
Unlike previous years, there will be no public parade, white-pigeon release, or national cake-cutting ceremony. Instead, the focus will shift to reflective and reform-driven events.
Later in the day, Mr. Tinubu will preside over a high-profile public lecture at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
The lecture, titled “Consolidating the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: The Necessity of Enduring Reforms”, will bring together scholars, policymakers, and civil society leaders to discuss the country’s democratic journey.
This year’s Democracy Day carries special weight as Nigerians celebrate 26 uninterrupted years of civilian rule. By replacing spectacle with sober reflection, the Presidency aims to underscore both the achievements and the reforms still required to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
