Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Spends N10 Billion on Office Furniture in Six Months, More Than Education and Health

The Kano State government, led by Governor Abba Yusuf, has spent N10.4 billion on office furniture and fittings in the first half of 2024. This amount is far more than the N3.9 billion budgeted for the entire year.

A review of the budget shows that while N10.4 billion was spent on office furniture, only N4.2 billion was allocated to water resources in the same period. Other important areas received much less money:

  • Rural and Community Development: N179 million
  • Education Sector: N2.5 billion
  • Higher Education: N323.6 million
  • Health Sector: N959 million
  • Rehabilitation of Hospitals/Health Centres: N1.3 billion

All these expenditures combined total N9.4 billion, which is still less than what was spent on office furniture and fittings alone.

This spending decision comes at a time when Kano State is facing serious problems like poor healthcare and constant water shortages. There have also been calls to reduce the cost of running the government.

Recently, the Northern Patriotic Agenda (NPA) urged Governor Abba Yusuf to focus on running the state and providing benefits to the people. They criticized him for not doing his job and instead engaging in political showmanship, which they say is making life harder for the people of Kano.

The large amount spent on office furniture raises concerns about the government’s priorities when there are so many urgent needs in the state.

The group had also criticised Governor Yusuf for neglecting his gubernatorial duties and engaging in political grandstanding, perpetuating the suffering of the people of Kano.
