Kano to Unveil Its First-Ever Trillion-Naira Budget for 2026

Kano State is preparing for one of the biggest financial decisions in its history, as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announces plans to submit a record-breaking N1 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year. This marks the first time Kano or any northern state will cross the one-trillion-naira mark.

The governor made the disclosure during a special Executive Council meeting organised to review the draft budget. According to him, the huge figure is not just symbolic; it reflects the state’s plan to expand development, modernise infrastructure and strengthen economic growth.

What Made the Trillion-Naira Projection Possible?

Governor Yusuf explained that the state achieved this milestone because of improved internal revenue and stricter financial management. Reforms introduced by his administration helped block leakages, increase collections, and tighten controls across ministries and agencies.

These gains, he said, gave Kano the confidence to prepare a more ambitious and development-focused budget for 2026.

What the Budget Will Focus On

The proposed budget gives priority to sectors the government believes can create jobs, support families and boost long-term growth. These include:

  • Housing – new schemes that will help reduce overcrowding and improve living conditions.
  • Agriculture – programmes aimed at supporting farmers, improving output and strengthening food supply.
  • Education – continued investment in schools, training and infrastructure to raise learning standards.
  • Healthcare – better facilities, equipment and services for residents.
  • SMEs – support systems that will help small and medium businesses grow and employ more people.

The governor said the goal is simple: ensure that the people of Kano feel the impact of the state’s financial progress in their daily lives.

Next Steps Before Approval

Once the Executive Council completes its review, the trillion-naira proposal will be forwarded to the Kano State House of Assembly. Lawmakers will then analyse, debate and adjust the document before giving final approval.

Governor Yusuf also promised full transparency throughout the budgeting process. He emphasised that the government intends to allocate funds in ways that allow ministries and agencies to provide efficient public services without waste.

Broader Developments in Kano

The announcement comes days after the governor approved the establishment of Gaya Polytechnic, following a bill passed by the state House of Assembly. The new institution is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen education across the state.

Meanwhile, political activities continue as Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, formally defected to the APC after his expulsion from the NNPP.
